9 Travel Essentials Always in Our Redoux Travel Kit
Summer’s here and many of us find ourselves planning trips to tranquil beaches, hidden cenotes, or even just a little overnight getaway rural locales that offer a change of scenery from our everyday vistas.
Traveling is something we all do at some point in our lives, but traveling the right way? That’s an art form. Expert travellers know that every trip requires a core kit of essential supplies that ease the often-tumultuous journey from one place to another, while simultaneously creating a sense of tranquility and home-away-from-home.
As we prepare for traveling (safely and responsibly) this summer, we put together a list of essentials for our Redoux Travel Kit. From hand cream to our favourite notebook, here are 9 things we never travel without:
Daytime and nighttime scents
Scent is everything to us here at Redoux, and selecting the right personal fragrance helps to set the tone for our travel days and to bridge the distance between home and our destination. We prefer to keep a daytime and nighttime scent handy at all times, helping to set the mood for the transition from afternoon to twilight.
For daytime, we love Byredo’s Bal d'Afrique. With notes of African Marigold, Bergamot, Buchu, Cyclamen, Violet, Moroccan Cedarwood, and Vetiver, this scent brings calls to mind the excitement of travel, spending the day outside exploring new locales.
For nighttime, we go with Le Labo’s JASMIN 17, which evokes a “sensuality and lure … amplified by a majestically harmonious chord of musk, sandalwood and vanilla.” Think unforgettable nights and new lovers.
A silk pillowcase
As much as we love the change of scenery that accompanies traveling, when it comes to bedding we want to save the best for our face and hair and always bring along our own pillowcase. Silk pillowcases are always the way to go, since they help to protect skin and hair from friction damage and keep you cool all through the night. This one from Brooklinen is made from Mulberry silk and comes in a variety of colorways (Cool Mint and Blush match perfectly with our Botanical Bars—coincidence?).
A well-designed water bottle
Hydration is key, especially during these hot summer months, not only for energy and general health (obvious, yes), but also for skin health. That’s why we had to include a sturdy water bottle in our Redoux packing kit. Thankfully, seeking functionality doesn’t necessarily mean giving up on aesthetics—we love these HAY George Sowden Water Bottles for their lightweight materials and cleverly-coordinated color schemes.
A moisturizing hand cream
A longtime classic, this Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm by Aesop simultaneously moisturizes and elevates your surroundings with notes of Mandarin Rind, Rosemary Leaf, and Cedar Atlas. A little goes a long way, so you’ll be carrying this one with you for many trips to come.
A good book
For some gentle intellectual and aesthetic stimulation on your travels, bring along Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers. A lovely and meandering exploration of the longstanding Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, "a worldview centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection," this updated version of the text muses to and fro on the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.
The perfect notebook
We often find that our creative and introspective thinking multiplies when traveling, so we always keep a good notebook nearby on trips. The perfect notebook is unexpectedly hard to come by, but after much searching we have found one to return to again and again: this dotted notebook from MUJI offers a format friendly to writers and artists alike, and stays shut with the help of a simple elastic band.
A refreshing room spray
So you’ve got your personal scents on hand, but what about the smell of your space? Though some hotels might have finely-tuned custom scents prepared for their spaces, many travel accommodations feature an (at-best) neutral starting place for our senses of smell. This Yucatan Rosas Frescas Room Spray from Mexican perfumery Coqui Coqui “celebrates the sweet, chic, innocence of living in the moment.” Centering the scent of rose petals, the spray is “uplifting and energetic in its pure positivity … combined with a twist of citrusy lemon for an expression of modern sophistication.” Setting the mood never came so easy.
Your favorite bar of soap
